SSA v. Reaching Definitions

I overheard (listened) your conversation after class today. I thought that the placement of phi functions is equivalent to reaching definitions analysis? In particular, phi functions are exactly where multiple definitions first occur at a program point?

I was just saying that SSA does not obviate reaching definitions analysis. We still need them due to other reasons, like memory operations. We can chat more after the next class.
